Chapter Twenty

Michael, Maxim, and Alex – my three main suspects. I’m pretty sure that it isn’t Alex who has twisted my arm behind my back with this silly blackmail. He’s the one on the hunt for my five victims in the first place. It’d be silly for him to blackmail me into murder, only for him to do the dirty work.

That leaves me with Maxim and Michael. Those two have been with me for a long time, but that doesn’t mean they can’t turn sour at a moment’s notice. If I know one thing, it’s that nobody is truly loyal. Greed is a drug so powerful that it can drive a man to stab his own brother in the back. I’ve seen it all too often.

My phone vibrates as I arrive at the office. I thought Alex was still at the mansion, but by the noise in the background nearly drowning out his voice on the line, he’s already left.

“Hey boss, you know how I was saying I was having trouble finding the second guy on your list?”

“Maybe if you weren’t getting shitfaced in my house, you’d have an easier time with that,” I grumble. “Why aren’t you at the office?”

“Hey, relax, I do my best work hungover. Anyway, I found the guy. You’re going to want to come and see this. Seriously.”

I narrow my eyes and glance down at the silver Rolex on my wrist. It’s nearly noon, and I have paperwork to do pertaining to Buster’s defunct strip club. I don’t really have time to be slinking around town unless it’s important.

“Is this important?” I ask. “I’m a little busy.”

“I wouldn’t be calling you if it wasn’t. You know I don’t like people coming with me when I make hits.”

“Well, you’re not really making a hit.”

“I might as well be, but seriously, come down here. This is… really something else.”

I reluctantly agree, but I do have to admit I’m curious about what Alex is talking about. For a moment, I have the bad feeling that he’s trying to lure me into a trap, but that would just be paranoia sinking in from my prior suspicions. I just can’t trust people like I used to.

After getting an address from Alex, I check it on the map, making sure it’s a public space. The only thing that will quell my paranoia is knowing that I’m not walking into something that I’ll regret. It feels stupid not to be able to trust my own men, but that’s what it’s going to be like until I figure out who is behind this blackmail.

I’m about to call my driver when the thought pops into my head to go alone. What if it’s my driver who is behind all this? He knows everywhere I go, and he hears the conversations I have in the car. It doesn’t seem likely that he would want to do something like this, but I can’t rule anyone out.

Yes, it’s better to go alone this time. Molly can use the driver if she wants to, but I’m going to be the one driving myself around from now on.
